****** NEW! Phishing Scams posing as Credit Unions******

There is a new phishing scam in progress affecting at least five credit unions in Ohio. The "smishes" are being distributed by voice mail and text message. The text message states "this is an automated message from Middletown Area Schools Credit Union; your ATM card has been suspended. To reactivate call 1-410-910-0787." The voice messages are also automated and states that an ATM card has been suspended.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Phishing is the practice of sending an e-mail, text messages, and voice mail that appears to be from a financial institution with the goal of persuading users to share sensitive information that can be used to commit fraud or identity theft. The criminals that send out these scams can copy our logo and imitate the "look and feel" of our messages to try and persuade you that the message is genuine. If you respond to these messages  by sharing personal financial information, please contact MASCU immediately. Always remember that MASCU will NEVER ask you to click on an e-mail link to share sensitive financial information. Also, MASCU will NEVER ask you to call any telephone number other than 513-422-2392. WE URGE YOU NOT TO FALL FOR ANY OF THESE SCAMS.ONE OF THE STAFF AT MASCU WILL PERSONALLY CONTACT YOU IF THERE IS A PROBLEM. WE WILL NOT ASK FOR ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION. NEVER GIVE INFORMATION OUT OVER THE PHONE!

*****NEW! Credit card Scam*****

This one is pretty slick since the scammers provide YOU with all the information, except the one piece they want. The callers do not ask for your card number; they already have it. The scam works like this: Caller starts: "This is (name) and I am calling from the Security and Fraud Department at (Visa or MasterCard). My Badge number is 12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your (Visa/MasterCard) which was issued by (name of bank). Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a marketing company based in (state)." When you say no, the caller continues with, "Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives your address), is this correct?" You say yes. The caller continues, "I will be starting a Fraud investigation." Then the caller says, " I need you to verify you are in possession of your card" He will ask you to "turn your card over and look for some numbers" There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are the security numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card. The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him. You actually say very little, and they never ask for the card number. What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card. DO NOT GIVE IT TO THEM! Instead , tell the caller that you will call VISA or MASTERCARD directly for verification. Then call the number on the back of your card. DO THIS ANYTIME YOU FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE WITH A PHONE CALL. Even if it is a legitimate call, the person will not be offended, rather to be safe than sorry!
